Why is My Air Conditioner Dripping Water?

The only real cause for concern is when an air conditioner is leaking water inside – as there is a risk of plaster and electric damage. This can be both expensive and dangerous. This is an instance where you should get in touch with a professional ASAP and get your air conditioning unit looked at.

Water dripping from an air conditioner can be due to several common causes, some simple and others requiring professional help.

Here’s a guide on potential reasons for air conditioning water leakage and what you can do about it:

1. Clogged Drain Line

When the air conditioning unit operates on cooler mode, this issue may occur due to condensation of moisture around the evaporator coil. Usually, this isn’t an issue you need to worry about. However, sometimes it may be a more serious cause for concern! So long as the water isn’t overflowing from the drainage pipe and damaging the connected wall, this generally shouldn’t be an issue. This can often be alleviated by removing a suspected blockage in the condensate drain line and thereby allowing a greater volume of water to pass through.

You should only be concerned when you observe consistent dripping – that continues when the air conditioning unit is switched off. This is a sign that the air conditioning unit may be faulty and you should get this checked out by one of our service technicians.

  • Cause: Over time, dirt, dust, and mold can clog the condensate drain line, preventing water from flowing out properly.
  • Solution: Have a service technician clear the clogged and dirty drain line to restore proper drainage.

2. Dirty Air Filter

When the filters are blocked air flow is restricted causing moisture to build up in the air conditioning unit.

  • Cause: A dirty filter restricts airflow, causing the evaporator coil to freeze. When the ice melts, excess water may leak.
  • Solution: Clean your air filter every 1-3 months to maintain good airflow, by removing the filter and vacuuming the excess dust and then wipe with a damp cloth, make sure filters are dry before re-fitting them into the unit.

3. Low Refrigerant Levels

There are a number of reasons for low refrigerant, this can be due to a gas leak or the unit is ageing and is nearing its life span.

  • Cause: Low refrigerant can also cause the evaporator coil to freeze, leading to water leakage when it melts.
  • Solution: Have a licensed technician check and refill the refrigerant if needed, or quote to replace for a new system due to the age of the unit.

4. Damaged or Rusted Drain Pan

  • Cause: An older or damaged drain pan may develop cracks or rust, causing water to leak.
  • Solution: A service technician will need to diagnose this issue, and replace the damaged drain pan to prevent further leakage, if the unit is still in the 5-year warranty period it can be replaced under warranty.

5. High Humidity or Extreme Weather

  • Cause: In high humidity, more condensation forms, and the air conditioner may struggle to handle the excess water.
  • Solution: Keep your temperature settings at the ambient temperature of around 22c, turning the remote settings too low in summer can cause condensation to form, water will drip from the unit.

Is Water Dripping from an AC Dangerous?

Generally, water dripping is not hazardous, but prolonged leakage can damage walls, floors, and even electrical components of the unit. Addressing the issue early can prevent costly repairs and potential hazards.

Regular Maintenance Tips:

  • Schedule professional maintenance at least once a year.
  • Regularly clean or replace filters and check for any visible signs of wear.
  • Inspect the drain line and pan to ensure there are no clogs or damage.

Following these tips can reduce the likelihood of leaks and ensure your AC runs efficiently.
